Some midnight thoughts, might delete later.. I may be speaking for all creatives in the Web3 space or it could just be me, but after being in the space for 4 years, it’s still sad whenever I see people expecting free work from creatives, whether it’s art or design. I’ve met a lot of artists that have entered Web3 and many of them are here to make a living. Not trying to be stereotypical, but a lot of creatives are not rich because most of them don’t have the knowledge or ability to make money, hence why they are specialized in the creative field. So it’s actually sad whenever I see people saying or having the mentality of “do it for the vibes” or “do it for the community”. As much as I’m sure most creatives would love to, the sad truth is that vibes can’t feed anyone. Not trying to throw shade at anyone, but if you promote that kind of mentality, then this is the kind of environment you’re building for people that actually need the money and are not financially able to keep doing free work. If you keep giving out freebies then obviously the market would rather go to you than pay someone for it. I’ve had many conversations in DMs go like “Yo do you wanna help us with ____?” and the moment I mention a price I get ghosted. Yes, there are times where we do edits and customs for free out of good will, but I just feel like it shouldn’t be the general “expectation” that we just do free shit all the time because we’re “part of the community”. If you truly respect our craft, then be willing to pay for it to support us. That being said, to everyone that has commissioned me for my work over the past 4 years, I appreciate you for valuing my craft and supporting me, it truly means a lot. I hope do that the space changes and does better for the sake of all creatives especially those that are struggling. Okay that’s it for the rant. Peace out.
