AI now plays an important role in Thai education, especially in Personalized & Accelerated Learning. Accordingly, SCB 10X has initiated projects with the Thai education sector to pilot AI in real-world learning contexts with Typhoon model, enhancing personalization, strengthening student outcomes, easing teacher workload, and ensuring measurable impact. . What is RISA? RISA is an AI-powered assistant for students and teachers, designed to enhance learning and support preparation for PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment)—a global assessment of student competencies that reflects each country’s education system quality. In this pilot phase, RISA focuses on Reading Comprehension as a priority. It reduces teacher time on grading, especially for open-ended questions and on providing individualized feedback, tasks that can currently take more than 2–3 hours per test set. For students, RISA provides an effective Thai-language assistant for practicing reading comprehension skills, with 24/7 support via LINE application. . RISA was developed using Typhoon model, a Thai large language model (LLM) built upon an extensive Thai language dataset. This makes it a highly proficient Thai model with a deep understanding of Thai context, in addition to its high performing Thai language understanding capabilities. The project leverages various components of the Typhoon Model: Typhoon 70B and Typhoon 12B text models for the assistant's core functions, and the Typhoon OCR visual model to convert exam data from PDF files into a usable digital format. . RISA performs 2 key roles: 1. Grading Assistant: RISA can evaluate students' open-ended answers based on a given scoring rubric. It also provides personalized feedback with appropriate reasoning for each student's response. 2. Explaining Assistant: RISA helps provide explanation complex content by answering students' follow-up questions in Thai and adjusting tone and depth to fit the context. It can also analyze points of misunderstanding and create tailored explanations for different skill levels, from beginner to advanced. The explanations range from concise summaries to detailed step-by-step breakdowns, promoting reading comprehension skills for each student. . Harnessing AI to Tackle Thailand’s Education Challenges . Currently, Thai education system faces significant challenges. Teachers carry a heavy workload, particularly with grading and providing detailed feedback, which can take 6-8 hours per week and cause delays in the feedback process. Meanwhile, students often need additional explanations to grasp complex concepts and require varying levels of support. . To address these issues, RISA was developed as a tool to alleviate the teachers' workload. By assisting with grading and drafting feedback, it reduces repetitive tasks and gives teachers back approximately 5 hours per week. It also serves as a personalized assistant for students, providing explanations and answers tailored to each individual's understanding. . RISA Pilot Highlights In a pilot with more than 10,000 at Grade 9 students across over 350 schools nationwide, about 55–56% of students improved their test scores—comparing the first test to the highest score achieved, or pre-/post-tests of equal difficulty—indicating meaningful learning gains with RISA. The AI system demonstrates high accuracy, achieving 90% grading alignment with teacher scoring. As an Explaining Assistant powered by the Typhoon 12B model, it received a 98% rating from participating teachers across five dimensions including accuracy, completeness, clarity, naturalness of language, and appropriateness for the target learner group. Beyond academic outcomes, student engagement is strong, with an average engagement time of 20.5 minutes, notably higher than typical EdTech app averages. Reliability and safety are also robust, with hallucinations and safety issues under 1%. . Strategic Partnerships Collaboration This initiative is the result of collaboration among leading partners: the Office of the Education Council (OEC), SCB 10X, and Guardrails AI—each playing a critical role: Office of the Education Council (OEC): Co-designed question rubrics and pathways for using results, and explored/demonstrated AI capabilities to support readiness for national assessments. SCB 10X: SCB 10X developed RISA Chatbot using Typhoon model, a Thai LLM with a deep understanding of Thai context and language, and highly efficient data processing capabilities. @guardrails_ai: An SCB 10X portfolio company that offers Snowglobe ( a simulation tool that generates diverse user scenarios to rigorously test chatbot performance, quality, and safety. This reduces the risk of hallucinations and ensures RISA is safe, reliable, and production-ready—especially for students. #SCB10X #RISA #AI #EdTech #AIforEducation #GuardrailsAI #Snowglobe
