Underwriting is a fancy way of saying that Goldman, JPMorgan, etc. analyze the business and try to figure out what it’s worth. They all told Figma that the business is worth $33/share…but then the banks took those 36M shares after giving Figma the $1.2B and… then priced them at $100 a share. Wall Street made about $2B on the difference between $100 and $33 simply because they sucked at pricing the IPO. Why do I say they sucked? Well if someone is willing to pay $100 for something that is “underwritten” at $33…if the value of an asset is what someone is willing to pay for it…Figma could’ve went public at $100 and raised an extra $2B for themselves. IPO season is back and the banks are cashing in, long financials 🚀
